Since it’s opening in 2011, DaisyCakes has become known for its delicious pastries -including an entire line of gluten free options – and for their fabulous lunch and brunch offerings. Owner and Pastry Chef, Tanya Matta, offers creations which are often a twist on a classic, such as the Chocolate Porter Moon Pie or the Roasted Banana Creme Brûlée Tart or baked to order S’mores molten cake. She enjoys using local and seasonal ingredients and adding herbs to compliment sweet desserts. Tanya is passionate about her craft and she, along with her talented and caring staff, wish to bring you memorable food in an inviting setting.
Tanya began her professional pastry career at at the esteemed Seeger’s restaurant in Atlanta in 1998 and continued to learn and hone her pastry skills at The Ritz Carlton, Atlanta. Her big break was her position as pastry chef at Bacchanalia, one of Atlanta’s most celebrated fine dining restaurants. There she helped open Star Provisions and developed dessert menus and bakery offerings for Bacchanalia and its sister restaurant Floataway Cafe.
In 2001 she moved to New York City to learn from her mentor, Claudia Fleming, at Gramercy Tavern. This valuable experience was followed by a pastry position at Todd English’s first NYC Olives Restaurant. In 2006 she returned to North Carolina with her family, first working at Nana’s Chophouse in Raleigh and later landing a position as pastry chef for the elegant Fairview Restaurant at the Washington Duke Inn. During this time she and former husband and business partner launched DaisyCakes, which had it’s humble beginnings operating out of a vintage airstream. The Airstream, named “Sugar,” helped spark the food truck movement in Durham and within three years, they opened their little shop near the Durham Farmer’s Market.
We are grateful to say that in three years, we have become a fixture in the downtown Durham community. Thank you Durham for your continued support!
